The Dasman Center for Research and Treatment of Diabetes is located in the Dasman area of Kuwait City, which is a couple of miles from downtown.
Why a facility focusing on diabetes? The late Emir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, had the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences conduct a survey of the top diseases in Kuwait in order to establish a specialized research and treatment center for the leading disease. The fastest growing disease in Kuwait was found to be diabetes.
The Dasman opened in June 2006, and dedicates 40% of its efforts towards diabetes research, 30% towards providing education and training for community members and healthcare professionals, and 30% towards providing clinical services at the tertiary level.
The Dasman’s facilities include: laboratories for clinical testing and pure and applied research; outpatient clinics (i.e., adult and pediatric, eye, foot, dietary, psychosocial, nephrology, neurology, cardiology, sexual dysfunction, pregnancy); an educational kitchen for patients and families; 16 patient day rooms; a “lifestyle modification centre” (i.e., fitness/gym/pool facilities); libraries (one for the public and one for professionals); a kitchen/dining room for staff and visitors; and an auditorium. The Dasman also offers courses for medical students with residency training for physicians and fellowships in diabetology. It also anticipates offering training for nurses to become certified nurse educators, and for nutritionists and dietitians to become diabetes educators.
