Summary:
Performs administrative, managerial and professional work providing leadership, directing, planning, and organizing activities for assigned pharmacy sections. Formulates policy and institutes models that promote medication safety in all aspects of the medication management process in assigned pharmacy sections.
Principal Duties:
- Oversees management and use of medication error information in assigned pharmacy sections. Reviews internal error reports and utilizes information from external reporting programs (e.g., ISMP Medication Safety, MOH, and Saudi FDA).
- Manages medication-error reporting, review, and investigation to determine root case, and data entry into database in collaboration with area manager. Analyzes data and determines trends for process improvement, develops the required measures to eliminate the likelihood of occurrence or recurrence of errors.
- Facilitates changes meet JCIA, MOH, and other standards of international accreditation organizations.
- Participates in all hospital committees related to medication safety and medication adverse occurrences, and assists in setting annual goals for medication safety improvement.
- Assists the Director of Pharmacy Services in organizing and administering the hospital pharmacy programs. Ensures the Director is informed of all matters relating to Pharmacy Service and its activities.
- Directs, administers, and coordinates the pharmacy functions in designated areas; supervises key personnel to ensure completion of work assignments, personnel management, and adherence to policies and procedures.
- Provides guidance and direction for area managers and staff in carrying out their responsibilities.
- Serves as Coordinator of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee.
- Ensures the effective and efficient provision of pharmaceutical care for patients in assigned specialty area.
- Responsible for dissemination, interpretation, and practice of departmental and hospital policies, procedures, regulations, and information.
- Reviews departmental operations for effectiveness with the use of computer print-outs for labor distribution and productivity analysis.
- Directs, assists, and resolves problems encountered by area managers in assigned pharmacy sections, in the development of objectives, physical facility, equipment and supply needs, personnel, organizational structure, work distribution, and operational processes.
- Responsible for annual budget preparation after consulting with area managers as to needs; monitors budget of assigned pharmacy sections during fiscal year.
- Interviews, selects, hires, and trains senior pharmacy staff, and evaluates pharmacists, technicians, and other support personnel in the performance of duties.
- Ensures compliance with quality standards, licensing requirements, pharmacy and MOH laws and regulations; takes remedial action to resolve or improve deficient operational conditions or problems.
- Performs clinical pharmacy functions as required, to include providing drug information to patients and other healthcare providers.
- Serves on and participates in activities of the P&T Committee, Medication Use Subcommittee, P&T Subcommittees, and/or other committees as assigned.
- Maintains pharmacy licenses, security, and control drug accountability.
- Develops and updates departmental policies and procedures. Ensures appropriate drug use and distribution throughout the King Faisal Specialist Hospital.
- Develops QI and competency assessment indicators.
- Works with medical staff, nursing, and other healthcare professionals to resolve drug-related problems.
- Participates in hospital and departmental QI activities through the development of goals and action plans to further the corporate mission of quality healthcare. Participates in activities of QI teams when requested. Monitors assigned QI indicators of individual or departmental performance.
- Ensures the appropriateness of medication order, including age-related factors, before preparing or permitting the distribution of the first dose.
- Follows all hospital policies and procedures.
- Participates in self and others' education, training, and development, as applicable.
- Other related duties, as assigned.
Requirements:
- Master's in Pharmacy or PharmD required
- Current, active pharmacist license in the USA or Canada
- Minimum 10 years hospital pharmacy experience in a large, tertiary setting in North America, including eight years of current experience in a management capacity in a large, tertiary setting in North America.
- Solid experience in development of programs focused on achieving positive outcomes in the use of medications.
- A strong background in clinical pharmacy coupled with pharmacy operations responsibilities.
- A general of specialized pharmacy residency or experience in an integrated health system preferred.
- Research experience and publications preferred.
