The Department of General Surgery at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia includes nine subspecialty sections: breast and endocrine, colorectal, general and minimally invasive, ophthalmology, pediatric, plastic, renal and pancreatic, thoracic, and peripheral vascular.
The trend across all subspecialties has been to adopt minimally invasive techniques, and new technologies – such as robotic surgery – are being performed.
The Surgical Unit has 34 beds. The department is staffed by 32 Consultant General Surgeons and Associate Consultants, and a total of 4,500 OR cases were performed in 2006.
Innovations in breast cancer surgery at the King Faisal include skin sparing mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction.
Prior to offering a permanent one- or two-year contract, the hospital invites doctors for a one-month locum. This provides an opportunity to see the hospital, the department, Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia before making a long-term commitment.
Requirements:
- American Boards or Canadian FRCSC in General Surgery, and
- A minimum of three years post-specialty certification experience in Breast Cancer Surgery in North America.
