Staffed by six Internal Medicine doctors, the Internal Medicine section at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia operates the following outpatient clinics each week:
- six internal medicine clinics
- four protocol clinics (for the treatment of VIPs)
- four anticoagulation and thromboembolic clinics (which manage the Thrombo-Embolic Disorders registry and Familial Thrombophilia registry)
The General Internal Medicine inpatient unit has 12 beds. Patients include all general internal medicine patients, as well as patients with acute thromboembolic diseases, patients with anticoagulation therapy problems, acute VIP patients, some chronic and long-term patients, patients with multi-system problems, drug overdoses, and suicide attempts. A large percentage of patient admissions are from the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Inpatient coverage is divided into two services: a consultation service (includes thromboembolism and preoperative inpatient assessment), and a general ward service.
Commonly performed procedures include:
- paracenteses
- bone marrow biopsy/aspirate
- pleural tap
- arthrocentesis
- lumbar puncture
- liver biopsy
Prior to offering a permanent one- or two-year contract, the hospital invites doctors for a one-month locum. This provides an opportunity to see the hospital, the department, Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia before making a long-term commitment.
Requirements:
- American Boards or Canadian FRCPC in Internal Medicine, and
- A minimum of three years post-specialty certification experience in Internal Medicine in North America.
