The Liver Transplant program at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia started in 2003. It has performed over 120 liver transplants.
The program collaborated with Australia’s Queensland Donate Program when establishing the service’s operating policies and procedures. It performs both cadaveric and living related transplantations, and it treats both pediatric and adult patients.
In 2006, the program:
- accepted 370 new cases
- admitted 460 patients
- had 4,200 outpatient clinic visits
- performed 37 liver transplants, of which 27 were cadaveric and 11 were living donor
Prior to offering a permanent one- or two-year contract, the hospital invites doctors for a one-month locum. This provides an opportunity to see the hospital, the department, Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia before making a long-term commitment.
Requirements:
- American Boards or Canadian FRCSC in General Surgery, and
- Specialized training in Transplant Surgery, and
- A minimum of three years post-specialty certification experience in Liver Transplant in North America.
