In 2006, a Consultant surgeon in the Ophthalmology section at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was renewed as a Council member for another four-year term (2006 to 2010) with the International Council of Ophthalmology.
The service, in collaboration with other regional hospitals (as part of the Health Outreach program), performed 17 ophthalmic surgeries in 2006. It operates the “Low Vision Clinic” for visually handicapped patients. And it uses Avastin and Lucentis to treat retinal diseases; in fact, the hospital was the first in the Middle East to use Avastin, and the first in both Europe and the Middle East to use Lucentis, for the treatment of retinal diseases.
The service has state-of-the-art equipment and technology, including:
- Nidek laser machine for retina-compromised patients
- Intra-Occular Lens Master machine
- ocular tomography
Prior to offering a permanent one- or two-year contract, the hospital invites doctors for a one-month locum. This provides an opportunity to see the hospital, the department, Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia before making a long-term commitment.
Requirements:
- American Boards or Canadian FRCSC in Ophthalmology, and
- Specialized training in Retinal Surgery, and
- A minimum of three years post-specialty certification experience in Ophthalmology and Retinal Diseases in North America.
