The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). The laboratory is fully computerized (it uses the Cerner Client Server Laboratory Information System), and it provides a broad range of clinical laboratory services (in 2006, it performed more than 6.3 million tests).
Blood Bank is a section of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and it is divided into four subsections:
Transfusion Services
- staff includes one supervisor, four senior medical laboratory technologists, and 15 staff medical laboratory technologists
- services include: blood typing, crossmatch, antibody identification, antigen typing, irradiation, and phenotyping
- operates 24 hours per day; shifts include: 7:00am to 7:00pm / 8:00am to 6:00pm / 7:00pm to 7:00am
Donor Processing
- staff includes one senior medical laboratory technologist, and three staff medical laboratory technologists
- services include: blood typing, HBsAg, HCV antibody, HIV I/II, HIV antigen (P24), malaria antibody, and syphilis antibody
- operates five days per week, 8:00am to 6:00pm (weekends applicable as needed)
Component Processing
- staff includes one senior medical laboratory technologist, and two staff medical laboratory technologists
- services include: separation of blood components, fresh frozen plasma, random platelets concentrate, cryoprecipitate, and pediatric aliquot
- operates five days per week, 7:00am to 10:30pm (weekends applicable as needed)
Donor/Apheresis
- staff includes one supervisor, two senior medical laboratory technologists, 10 staff nurses, and two donor recruiters
- services include: platelets pheresis, plasma exchange, and stem cell collection
- operates five days per week, 7:00am to 9:30pm (weekends applicable as needed)
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree/Associate’s degree/Diploma in Medical Technology, and
- Current registration with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS), and
- A minimum of two years experience as a registered Medical Technologist in a mid- to large-sized hospital in North America.
