Medical Technologist - Cytology

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). The laboratory is fully computerized (it uses the Cerner Client Server Laboratory Information System), and it provides a broad range of clinical laboratory services (in 2006, it performed more than 6.3 million tests).

Annually, the Cytopathology section receives more than 7,400 gynecologic, non-gynecologic, and fine needle aspiration specimens.

The section’s hours of operation are:
Saturday through Tuesday: 7:30am to 5:00pm
Wednesday: 7:30am to 4:00pm

(Between 4:00pm Wednesday and 7:30am Saturday, the section is staffed on an on-call basis for STAT cases only.)

On staff are a Supervisor, two Senior Cytotechnologists, two staff Cytotechnologists, and one Medical Laboratory Technician. The equipment is state-of-the-art and includes: two ThinPrep 2000 Processors, a Shandon Cytospin 3, and a Fisher Scientific Centrifuge.

Senior Cytotechnologists perform all routine duties such as assisting in FNA procedures, cytopreparation, staining, and examining and interpreting cases. In addition, they are responsible for the day-to-day organization of workflow, teaching, monitoring QC records, QI, staff scheduling, and procedures update.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (USA) or Diploma in Medical Technology (Canada), and
  • Current Technologist-level (e.g., MT, CT) registration with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS), and
  • A minimum of two years current experience as a registered Medical Technologist in cytology (gyn and non-gyn experience required) in a mid- to large-sized hospital in North America.
