The Heart Institute (KFHI) at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre’s in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is the only heart transplantation centre in Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf.

The Cardiac OR (or OR Level IV) has four operating room theatres. It is staffed by approximately 20 nurses, and managed according to the standards set out by the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN).

Cardiovascular and thoracic surgical procedures are performed on both adult and paediatric patients. In 2006, the service performed 12 heart transplants, with an early survival rate of 95%. The service also performed more than 870 open-heart surgeries and more than 1,200 cardiac surgeries.

The most common surgical procedures include:

  • coronary artery bypass surgery
  • valve repair/replacement
  • thoracic aortic aneurysm repair
  • congenital cardiac defects

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, and
  • Current nursing license in Canada or the United States, and
  • A minimum of six years experience as a Registered Nurse, including a minimum of one year as a Nurse Manager/Head Nurse, at a large acute-care teaching hospital in North America.
