Competency-based nursing is practiced in the 19-bed Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit – which is part of the Heart Institute – at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The King Faisal Heart Institute is the only heart transplantation centre in Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf.
The CSICU receives adult and pediatric patients directly from the four cardiovascular operating room theatres (Level IV ORs).
In 2006, the service performed 12 heart transplants, with an early survival rate of 95%. The service also performed more than 870 open-heart surgeries and more than 1,200 cardiac surgeries, including:
- coronary bypass surgery
- cardiac valve replacement/reconstruction
- thoracic aortic aneurysm surgery
- congenital cardiac defect repairs
- robotic heart surgery
- MAZE arrhythmia surgery
- heart and lung transplant
More than 50% of patients are pediatric patients with complex congenital anomalies.
Nurse to patient ratio:
1 : 1 or 2
Shifts are 12-hours in length and follow the American rotation. Overtime is available.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing, and
- Current nursing license in Canada or the United States, and
- A minimum of two years experience as a Registered Nurse working in a mid- to large-sized acute-care hospital in North America.
