Nurses in the 15-bed Acute Leukemia/Adult Bone Marrow Unit – which is part of the Cancer Center’s Hematology Section – at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia function within a total care nursing system.
The Hematology Section is responsible for the investigation and management of adult patients with a variety of hematological malignancies (mostly acute and chronic leukemias, myelodysplastic syndromes, multiple myeloma), as well as several non-malignant hematological disorders. In addition to the acute leukemia unit, its facilities include a five-bed intermediate level ICU, a 15-bed bone marrow transplant unit (the service performs about 120 BMTs annually), and outpatient clinics.
The hematology section also has an extensive hematopoietic stem cell transplantation program, with a focus on allogeneic stem cell transplantation. It performs 60 to 65 stem cell transplantations annually, and follows stem cell transplantation patients at a specialized bone marrow transplant clinic within the hospital.
Nurse to patient ratio:
1 : 2 or 3 during day shifts
1 : 3 or 4 during night shifts
Shifts are 12-hours in length and follow the American rotation. Overtime is available.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing, and
- Current nursing license in Canada or the United States, and
- A minimum of two years experience as a Registered Nurse working in a mid- to large-sized acute-care hospital in North America.
