Nurses in the Liver Transplant/Renal Transplant/Nephrology Unit at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia function within a total care nursing system. The 27-bed unit treats both adult and pediatric patients in the three areas:

i) Nephrology:

  • Patients with acute renal failure and end stage renal disease are treated at hospital-based hemodialysis units.
  • Approximately 1,300 hemodialysis and hemofiltration patients (pediatric and adult) are treated per month.

ii) Liver transplant:

  • The Liver Transplant program started in 2003 and, since that time, the program has performed over 120 liver transplants, both cadaveric and living donor.
  • In 2006, the program performed 37 liver transplants, of which 27 were cadaveric and 11 were living donor.

iii) Kidney transplant:

  • The Renal and Pancreatic Transplant program has performed more than 1,200 kidney transplants since 1981.
  • In 2006, the program performed 140 kidney transplants and four pancreas transplants.
  • Patient survival is at 99% and graft survival rate is at 97%.
  • Renal Transplant Surgeons (there are three currently on staff) have performed pediatric kidney transplants on children as small as 10.0kg.

The unit has a procedure room where various procedures (e.g. renal biopsies) are performed, two negative pressures rooms.

Nurse to patient ratio:
based on acuity

Shifts are 12-hours in length and follow the American rotation. Overtime is available.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing, and
  • Current nursing license in Canada or the United States, and
  • A minimum of two years current experience as a Registered Nurse, of which at least one must be in the specialty area, working in a mid- to large-sized acute-care hospital in North America.
