The Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is the largest pediatric stem cell transplant center in the region (it performed 114 stem cell transplants in 2006 alone), and it is the regional referral centre for complicated non-malignant hematological disorders. Nurses in the department function within a total care nursing system.
The department – which is also responsible for pediatric hematology/oncology at the King Fahad National Center for Children’s Cancer Research in Riyadh – has 26-beds and receives approximately 350 to 450 new cases annually, and patients range in age from newborn to 13 years.
Most patients will have a family member with them 24/7 for their entire hospital stay. The most commonly treated problems include:
- newly diagnosed acute leukemias requiring induction therapies
- neoplastic disease and the complications of its treatment
- benign hematological conditions
- coagulation disorders
- pre- and post-bone marrow transplant care
- immune deficiency syndromes
- metabolic diseases
Nurse to patient ratio:
1 : 3 or 4 during day shifts
1 : 4 or 5 during night shifts
Shifts are 12-hours in length and follow the American rotation. Overtime is available.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing, and
- Current nursing license in Canada or the United States, and
- A minimum of two years experience as a Registered Nurse working in a mid- to large-sized acute-care hospital in North America.
