Countries:
  • Saudi Arabia

  • United Arab Emirates

Although people speak of working in the “Middle East”, most of the professional jobs (in healthcare, finance, engineering, etc.) are found in five of the six countries of the Arabian Peninsula: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman.

Although these countries initially became wealthy on oil, they have since developed other economic activities. All of the countries have developed their own universities and will soon have enough of their own healthcare and other professional staff. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman are aggressively developing successful tourist industries.

With the exception of Yemen, all of the countries are fabulously wealthy: the hotels and office towers are extravagant in their design; fantastical water fountains splash everywhere; shop windows glitter with the latest fashions; and the streets are crowded with Porsches, BMWs and Mercedes.

Yemen, in contrast, has largely kept its historic buildings and traditional ways of life. Many westerners, including this writer, find Yemen to be the most intriguing.
