HIV Epidemics in the Middle East
According to ArabianBusiness.com, research done by Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar has shown the existence of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) epidemics in the Middle East and North Africa, specifically in Egypt, Sudan, Pakistan and Tunisia.
Because of its culture, the Middle East seldom publicizes any data surrounding HIV rates. And the data that is now available is alarming. Rates in some areas of Pakistan have reached 28 percent.
It is estimated that 33.3 million people are currently living with HIV worldwide (United Nations, 2009), and it will be interesting to see if this estimate increases with these newly published statistics.
