The Middle East and the Race to the Top
According to a new article in the August 2, 2011 Globe and Mail, Saudi Arabia has announced that a $1.2 billion deal has been signed with the construction company Saudi Binladen Group and plans are moving forward on the construction of the 1,000-meter-high (3-280-foot-high) Kingdom Tower.
Kingdom Tower, which some are calling the "Mile High Tower," will be built in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and will include a five-star hotel, office space, and luxury residences, each with breathtaking views of the Red Sea, and the mountains to the east.
Kingdom Tower will take the record from the world's current tallest building – the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at 828 meters (2,716 feet).
Saudi Arabia is not the only country vying for the title of "World's Tallest Structure." Kuwait has plans for it's own 1,000-meter-high (3,280-foot) structure – the Burj Mubarak al-Kabir.
