Qatar has announced it plans to practice sustainable agriculture. By 2013, the country hopes to transform 111,000 acres of arid desert into lush arable land. Considering Qatar currently produces only 10% of its food needs domestically and imports most of its food from impoverished African nations, the plan is ambitious. With an exploding population of 1.8 million inhabitants in a country 90% desert, producing food domestically could be a major step towards preventing riots and civil unrest. -Kuwait Times, Sept. 11, 2011
