Camel herds are dwindling, according to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization. In the Arabian Peninsula, tens of thousands of camels are slaughtered each year for the Hajj pilgrimage, while in Somalia the animals are dying from famine. Meanwhile in Australia, camels, an invasive species, have become such a nuisance that its parliamentary secretary has proposed a plan to have them shot for carbon credits.
