Though people often think of Toronto as Canada's capital, it isn't so: The capital is Ottawa, set in the picturesque Ottawa Valley of eastern Ontario. Ottawa is considered one of the world's most beautiful capital cities.
The city is located across the Ottawa River from the city of Gatineau, Quebec, so it's no surprise that much of the city's 800,000+ residents are bilingual. Together, the two cities make up the National Capital Region, and the metro area has a population of about 1.2 million.
It's no surprise that government is a major employer in Ottawa, but it is also an international technology and business centre, with world class tourism and convention facilities. The city is home to 30 museums, 50 galleries and theatres, several post-secondary institutions, plenty of night clubs and fine dining establishments, excellent shopping, heritage sites and festivals, and professional hockey and football. Two must-see museum venues are the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the National Gallery of Canada.
Ottawa is one of the greenest metro areas in North America. There are numerous walking and hiking trails, and the Ottawa Valley stretches from the city into Algonquin Park, offering four-season activities on land and water.
Speaking of four seasons, each winter, the city plays host to the famous Winterlude, during which part of the fun involves skating along the Rideau Canal (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), which annually becomes the world's longest skating rink, stretching 7.8 km (4.8 miles) through downtown Ottawa . In the spring, the city blooms as more than 100,000 tulip bulbs burst into bloom for the Tulip Festival.
Ottawa's climate is described as a humid continental climate, with record highs and lows spanning the thermometer from 38C (100F) to -38C (-36F). In general, Ottawa experiences relatively warm summers, with snowy, cool winters. July is statisticaly the warmest month, with highs averaging 26C (79F), while average lows in January, the coldest month, are -15C (5F).
When you'd like to get away, Ottawa is home to an international airport, and is only four hours northeast of Toronto and two hours west of Montreal by road.
