Competency-based nursing is practiced in the Intensive Care Unit at The King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which has a total of 54 beds divided into four units:

The 15-bed Surgical Special Care Unit (SSCU-B) treats patients who have undergone major surgical procedures such as: craniotomy; aorto-femoral bypass; and all transplantations (e.g. thoracic, renal, liver, lung, and pancreatic). Cardiology patients may also be treated here if beds are unavailable in the Cardiac ICU.
The 20-bed central MICU (MICU-C) This unit provides acute, intensive care for medical patients aged 14 years and above in the East Wing. Medical, and oncologic conditions requiring intensive care include patients who respond to cardio-respiratory arrest resuscitation, patients with one or more system failure who need observation and/or active management such as patients with circulatory failure requiring massive volume expansion and/or vasoactive medications and invasive monitoring, patients with respiratory failure who require supportive measures such as endotracheal intubation with mechanical ventilation. Patients with CNS instability such as status epilepticus/increased ICP who require active management.
The seven-bed MSICU-D sees medical and surgical patients aged 14 and older.
The 12-bed MICU-E treats medical and oncology patients.

1,500 patients (age 14 and up) are admitted annually. Approximately 65% of patients are surgical cases. Registered respiratory therapists (RRTs) provide continuous respiratory support. The ICU uses the Pyxis medication system and the ICG/Vigileo Hemodynamic monitoring system.

Nurse to patient ratio: 1 : 1 or 2

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree or Associate's degree or Diploma in Nursing, and
Current nursing (RN) license in Canada or the United States, and
A minimum of two years current experience as a Registered Nurse, working in a mid- to large-sized acute-care hospital in North America, of which at least one year must be in the specialty area
