Unit Description:

Nurses in the Medical Nephrology, Medical/Surgical Liver & Renal Transplantation unit at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, function within a total care nursing system. The 33-bed unit (B-2) treats both adult and pediatric patients in liver, renal and lung transplantation:

i) Pre & Post Renal Transplantation:

  • Cadaveric transplantation
  • Living related/non related transplantation
  • Negative cross-match and ABO incompatible transplantation
  • Immuno-adsorption
  • Therapeutic plasma exchange and plasmapheresis (TPE)
  • Infusion of IVIG and anti-thymocyte globulin, Ritimab
  • High dependency 1:1 nursing care post transplantation for 24 hours only.
  • Cc per Cc fluid replacement and management

iii) Liver Diseases:

  • Cadaveric/Orthotopic liver transplantation
  • Living related/non related transplantation
  • Ca of liver
  • Hepatocellular Ca
  • Cryptogenic liver cirrhosis
  • End stage liver diseases
  • Viral hepatitis B & C
  • Liver resection
  • Infusion of IVIG, anti-thymocyte globulin
  • Hepatic encephalopathy
  • Pre-liver transplant work-up

iv) Lung Transplant

  • Pre and Post-Operative Care


  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Diploma in Nursing (NOTE: degree/diploma must be a minimum three-year NURSING curriculum; degree/diploma CANNOT be online or distance education) (Due to licensing requirements, shorter degree/diploma programs are NOT accepted)
  • Associate Degree in Nursing of minimum two-year duration (Due to licensing requirements, shorter programs are NOT accepted, online programs are not accepted)
  • Current nursing (RN) license in Canada or the United States,
  • A minimum of two years current, full-time experience as a Registered Nurse, working in a mid- to large-sized, acute-care hospital in North America, of which at least one year must be in the specialty area (i.e., solid organ transplant)
