Al Mafraq Hospital

Introduction
Mafraq Hospital is a 500-bed tertiary-care hospital situated 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the city of Abu Dhabi. It was commissioned by The Ministry of Health in 1983 and serves as a general hospital for the city of Abu Dhabi and as a referral center for certain clinic specialties for the whole of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Mafraq Hospital is a busy hospital seeing, on average, 1000 outpatients per day. The Surgical Department performs approximately 500 operations per month. The Medical Records Department is computerized to keep a fast and accurate record of the large turnover of patients. All departments are served by well-trained medical secretaries.

Clinical Departments:
- The Medical Department includes specialists in Neurology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Infectious Diseases.
- The Orthopedic Department is kept busy by a large number of trauma cases. They perform joint replacement surgery routinely.
- The Ophthalmology Department is equipped with the most modern equipment, including Argon and Nd-Yag laser and performs complicated Vitreo-Retinal surgery routinely. The Department performs 700 major eye operations per annum.
- The Physical Medicine Departments has all the facilities for physiotherapy and Rehabilitation.
- The Urology Department has a Lithotripter for non-invasive dissolution of renal stones, a common problem in the UAE.

Non-Clinical Departments:
The Radiology Department is equipped with modern equipment including Computerized Topography and Digital subtraction angiography. The Laboratories are equipped with the most modern facilities to provide a fast and efficient service to the hospital. The Nuclear Medicine Department is equipped with facilities and isotopes to scan most organs with the latest version of Gamma cameras.

Tertiary Facilities
Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Renal Transplantation, Oncology Services, Burns Unit, Plastic Surgery and Neonatology are the specialties for which the hospital is a national referral center. The Cardiology Department performs all diagnostic and therapeutic invasive procedures including Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty and Intra- Coronary Stent Implantation. The Cardiac Surgery Department performs 450 open heart and closed operations a year. The Oncology service provides a multidisciplinary approach and the Radiology Department is equipment with the most advanced equipment. The Renal Transplant Department regularly performs live related transplants.

Continuing Medical Education
Suitable priority is given to Continuing Medical Education. There are library facilities with current subscript of all current international Medical Journals. There is a Medical Research Institute attached to the hospital. The hospital collaborates closely with faculty of Medicine on a number of research projects on a regular basis. The hospital is recognized by The Royal Colleges of Surgeons and Physicians of the United Kingdom for postgraduate training and these colleges regularly hold their postgraduate examinations here.
