The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSH&RC) is a modern, almost 1,000-bed Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited academic medical facility located in Riyadh, the vibrant capital city of Saudi Arabia

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) has 18 beds and provides 24 hour intensive nursing care for patients aged neonate through adolescence.

The primary conditions and diagnoses treated are:

  • Congenital heart disease, pre and post operative cardiac surgery
  • Hematology/Oncology, Immunocompromized patients
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Pediatric General Surgery, Neurosurgery
  • Vascular Surgery, ENT, Endocrinology
  • All sick medical patients requiring intensive care

Frequent Procedures/Services/Functions:

The PICU utilizes numerous nursing diagnostic and therapeutic modalities to facilitate patient care, including the following:

  • Use of nursing process, assessment, planning, interventions, and evaluation
  • IV Therapy
  • Thermo-regulation
  • Hemodynamic monitoring
  • Cardiac and neurologic monitoring
  • Ventilatory support
  • Psychosocial care
  • Patient and family education
  • Medication administration
  • Trauma care
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy (Prisma)
  • Pain management

Nurse-Patient Ratio:


  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Associate's degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma
  • Current nursing (RN) license in Canada, the United States, the UK, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand
  • A minimum of two years current, full-time experience as a Registered Nurse, of which at least one year must be in the specialty area, working in a mid- to large-sized acute-care hospital in Canada, the United States, the UK, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand
