Hinton Medical Clinic

The Hinton Medical Clinic is a group practice of 11 Family Physicians, each of whom have their own patients. The practice includes an office practice, managing in-hospital patients, and a minimum of five eight-hour ER shifts per month at the Hinton Healthcare Centre.

Family Physicians are responsible for providing all the medical care in the community. Physicians with extra training in anesthesia or obstetrics may focus on that specialty. Those with a preference for emergency medicine can do extra shifts in the ER. If a physician has an interest in geriatrics, Hinton has two centres for geriatric patients.

For those who like clinical teaching, the medical clinic is affiliated with the University of Alberta and currently has medical students and ER Residents doing five-month rotations at the clinic.

Physicians working at the Hinton Medical Clinic admit patients to the Hinton Healthcare Centre, a 24-bed, full-service, acute-care hospital, with 21 inpatient beds, two OR suites, and three L&D rooms. It is the regional referral centre for diagnostic services, as well as for surgery, obstetrics, and chemotherapy following cancer diagnoses.

The six-bed ER sees 30 to 40 patients per 24 hours.

The hospital has a full-time General Surgeon and a full-time, busy Orthopedic Surgeon, who does a high volume of joint replacements.

Visiting Consultants in other specialties, provide services either in person at the hospital or remotely. The visiting specialists come primarily from the academic hospitals of the University of Alberta in Edmonton (three hours away).
