Ottawa’s teaching hospitals serve a catchment area of approximately 1.5 million people.
The Ottawa Hospital has three tertiary-care hospitals under its umbrella: Ottawa Civic Hospital, Ottawa General Hospital, and the Riverside Hospital:
Ottawa Civic Hospital has approximately 500 beds, and includes the Ottawa Heart Institute; it was the site of the first heart transplant in Canada (1984) and the first site in Canada (third in North America) to implant an artificial heart (Jarvik 7) in (1985).
Ottawa General Hospital also has approximately 500 beds; in 1957, it was the site of Canada’s first autologous human BMT and in 1988, of the first BMT between unrelated donors.
Riverside Hospital has about 150 beds, and is known chiefly for rehabilitation of patients with complex and chronic conditions.
Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario has 167 beds, and provides care in both English and French.
Queensway Carleton Hospital: with 350 beds, it's the only full-service hospital in the West End
Monfort Hospital, 300 beds, is Ottawa's French-language hospital.
